Prevent sales burnout by understanding how it happens, which will allow you to design a life that will give you balance and fulfillment.
Most people are reactive vs. proactive in their lives because they don’t know better. Let’s face it, you go to a doctor to get fixed because something came up. You don’t usually go because you want to prevent something, although if you’re wise enough you may.
The key to health is making the right decisions early on and find life balance.
The Reality of Life
When you are younger you have your whole life ahead of you. You may do activities like working out, going to the gym, dancing, traveling, music, wall climbing, hanging out with friends, or any activity the meets your fancy. You are enjoying your life and you have all the time in the world.
At the same time all this fun is going on you’re going to school, then you work on your career.
There is so much going on in your life and now you are at the point to take the next step. You decide to get married, have children, etc. all of which the natural progression of having a fulfilling and enjoyable life.
Now during all this time of living your ideal life, you start to feel something is missing, but you just can’t put your finger on it. Then you realize that there’s not enough time in the day to do everything. Furthermore, you’re not the younger version of you and your energy is not like it used to be. You can only do so much in a day.
So, you rank the most important areas of your life that come first and you slowly let go of certain activities that gave you so much pleasure. And it happens slowly and over a time period. You don’t even realize what you are giving up because you are living in the moment dealing with your priorities.
Work, family, money, children.
You become a robot and everything becomes routine. Go, Go, Go.
My Life Controls Me
As time goes on you start to get stressed and you become fatigued. You may wonder what happened to your physique and realize you aren’t the same guy you were years before.
Your mind is constant overload, but you are a robot and you just keep on going. The term sales burnout isn’t even part of your vocabulary.
You may start to lose your inspiration, your sales decrease and you start having sales slumps that you never had before. What’s going on???
You can control your life, the choice is yours.
The Better Alternative To Prevent Sales Burnout
You will be able to prevent sales burnout by first having the awareness of the causes. As the result of this new awareness, you can become proactive. The choice is now yours to design the life you want that will give you life balance and fulfillment.
As a sales coach, one of the biggest issues I see is that salespeople become so overwhelmed with work and life in general, they give up on the stuff they used to love. I help bring back the “me” in the “how about me”.
Also, many people bottle things up inside themselves because of ego, shame, whatever and as a result, they don’t have a mechanism to release their frustrations. So try talking to someone about how you feel. You can also write in a journal or on a pad of paper. It’s amazing how cathartic this will be. Try it. It really does work.
Let’s Talk About Values
Your values, what’s important to you has a direct effect to prevent sales burnout. Values like love, family, health (exercise, diet etc.) fun, money (career) friends, socializing, etc.
What are your values? ________________________________________
Now, prioritize them 1__________, 2__________, 3_________, 4_________
For example you chose 1. Family, 2. Career, 3 Health, 4. Socializing
You probably know there is only so much time in the day so how are going to fit this stuff in?
They are all connected. But what happens if you only focus on some of them, what are the repercussions? What’s out of balance?
I like to use my car and balance metaphor to make the point.
My Car and Balance Metaphor
Compare this to a car. You rotate the tires so they wear equally, you make sure that the air pressure is good, you change the windshield washer, you clean the car, but you never change or check the oil.
Then after a couple of years, your oil warning light comes on and you do nothing. Then one day as your driving your car just stops.
You blew the engine. You would have had “balance” had you did the tire changing, the windshield washer and the other stuff “plus” look after the oil. Your outcome would have been different.
Bottom Line
In order to prevent sales, burnout involves you being proactive and making a conscious decision to live your life with balance, which includes doing things that you value and find enjoyable.
If you exercised or danced or whatever while you are young, find time during the week to do it. Did you get satisfaction and stimulated by playing piano, then find the time for it. Why not do something that makes you feel good?
Everyone needs some form of release. Even Donald Trump plays golf 🙂
Everything said and done it’s easier for some and not others.
